Abstract

At the Dutch National Physical Planning Agency (RPD), GIS technology has been used since the early eighties and has been incorporated more and more in the daily working practises. What began as the fancy tool of a number of specialists, is nowadays used throughout the RPD. One of the policy premises, as formulated in the Information Plan for 1989–1993, is that access to the ‘Geographic Information System’ is to be made possible for every researcher and planner as requested. In this chapter, the focus will be on database design and on the development of GIS at the Physical Planning Agency, in the light of present trends.
