Abstract
THE method of inbreeding and hybridization has been applied success fully in plant improvement, and has played a major role in many plant breeding investigation programs. In the case of domestic animals, a large number of commercial hybrid chickens has been produced in recent years in the United States. However, experimental evaluation of this method with animals has not been explored as extensively as it should have been. The long generation interval and low reproductive rate of the domestic animals, and great space and labor requirement might be the factors which have caused the drawback in experimenting with this method. Moreover, inbreeding depression greatly increases the operational costs and causes difficulty in maintaining the inbred lines.Inbreeding depression in the reproductive and physical characters of the domestic fowl has been reported by a number of investigators.
