Abstract

Two inbreds of maize (Zea mays L.) Wf9 and Pa83, that showed a consistent difference in stmnatal frequency (mm‐2) measured by epidermal replication, were used to investigate the genetic control of epidermal cell and stomatal frequency. The consistent difference in stomatal frequency between the inbreds was reproducible on adaxial and abaxial epidermises at three leaf positions on progeny obtained from three successive generations of selfing and grown in different years. The F1 generation showed dominance for low epidermal cell frequency and partial dominance for low stomatal frequency. The segregation ratios of F2 and backcross generations, the patterns of segregation, and the correlation between epidermal cell and stomatal frequency suggest that a simple genetic system controls epidermal cell and stomatal frequency.
