Abstract
The origin of professional nursing education in India evolved from unorganized apprenticeship training to a university level degree programme over a span of time across pre-independence and post independence. Nursing in India was initiated for military services by the British East India Company. The untiring efforts of the Trained Nursing Association of India during early twentieth century lead to foundation of advances in nursing education in India. The British ignited the revolution in nursing education by bringing trained nurses to India and establishing nursing traning schools. In the Post independence era, the Health Survey and Development committee (Bhore Committee) recommendations brought nursing education and preventive aspect of health tothe forefront. This article explores the development of professional nursing education in India.
