Abstract

Extending Yariv’s generic approach to the description of optical microresonators, we describe the second-harmonic generation and the optical parametric oscillation in whispering-gallery resonators (WGRs). The output characteristics of these nonlinear processes are expressed in terms of conventional cavity/coupling parameters and nonlinear material coefficients. The found relations are relevant to the description and optimization of experiments with nonlinearly active WGRs at ultralow input light powers.
