Abstract

Creativity can be a significant advantage in the pursuit of quality improvement in medical and health-care settings; however, it is often impeded by various social psychological factors, such as groupthink. This chapter synthesizes empirical research in organizational behavior and social psychology to outline some of the major challenges to creative thinking in groups. Some general suggestions for how to maximize creativity for quality improvement are also provided. By recognizing the barriers to group creativity (regarding idea generation and idea selection), quality improvement teams may be better able to maximize their resources and opportunities as well as avoid some common pitfalls.
