Abstract

The advent of recombinant DNA methodologies has made cloning the method of choice for retrieving and manipulating gene sequences for such gene transfer experiments. However, where the gene of interest is yet to be cloned or is comprised of a very large segment of DNA, metaphase chromosomes may be used as the source of donor genetic material. The method of gene transfer may have unique applications which should complement other methods of transgenesis. The development of this technique may be of particular interest for pursuing mouse models of human diseases for which the genes involved are yet to be identified. The “transomic” technique is advantageous in that it may make it possible to manipulate and transfer a large segment of chromosomal DNA. This is of particular importance when the transfer of a large gene or a gene cluster is sought.
