Abstract

A query of Texas Department of State Health Services database between 2009 and 2013. Of 29,046 patients >45 years old admitted with a diagnosis of symptomatic carotid artery stenosis, 56% were males and 44% were females. Patients with intracranial hemorrhage or atrial fibrillation were excluded. Only 16% of patients were revascularized during the index hospitalization. Adjusting for other factors, rates of index admission carotid intervention remained significantly lower for women, Blacks, and Hispanics. Gender, race, and ethnicity appear to correlate with rates of carotid intervention at index hospitalization, despite risk adjustment for clinical, social and demographic factors. Efforts should be directed towards reducing these disparities.
