Abstract

The Compstat model, developed in New York City, is an aggressive, crimefighting style of policing that has been emulated by numerous police agencies. It is argued that Compstat returns policing to a male-dominated model that may lead to illegal behavior (e.g., unlawful searches and seizures) especially by male officers. This research uses the factorial survey method with a large sample of New York City police officers-234 females out of 1,259-to study similarities and differences between male and female officers' legal behaviors. Although both men and women are influenced by the law, women are more likely to obey legal restrictions in weapon situations.
