Abstract

Gd-Fe-Co system has a high Kerr rotation under a forced magnetic field, but this is an in-plane magnetized film. We attempted to produce a perpendicularly magnetized film by adding Tb, Dy or Ho to GdFeCo with high Kerr rotation. Measurement of the variation with temperature of ? K for the samples with Tb, Dy and Ho substituted showed that ? K was higher for all of them than for the Tb-Fe-Co over the whole temperature range, indicating that they have a sufficiently large ? K value and that high playback output can be obtained. When static recording was performed on Gd-Dy-Fe-Co perpendicularly magnetized film, excellent recording bit formations of diameter 1.3 ?m were obtained.
