Abstract
Languages are a part of societal life that creates the thought maps of individuals. The importance of the pres in the development and change of language is undeniable. The language used by sports press is subject to popular and academic research and is generally criticised. In this study, the language used in sports pages and reports has been examined in terms of foreign words, phrases and language errors. A one month screening of the news reports and commentary in sports pages of daily newspapers Zaman, Posta, Hurriyet and the daily sports paper Fotomac was conducted during 1-28 February 2013, examining the language in the articles. As a result of the screenings, it has been discovered that words naturalized from English and French are used as they are or with their Turkish pronunciations in most of the news articles, especially those about football or basketball. Other than this, phrases have been used to create a preciosity in the language. It has been detected that the sports press uses a decorated and heavy language in the news reports and commentaries. It has been observed that foreign words about the sports branches in question are used frequently in sports related news and commentaries, and phrases are repeated often. Sports press should use a plainer and more careful language, and avoid using slang. Besides this, if possible, using the Turkish equivalent to foreign terms can be suggested.
