Abstract
This paper makes use of a discussion of Gauss' method of measuring the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field as a means for presenting those ideas concerning the natures of magnetic quantities which have been promulgated by the International Eleetrotechnical Commission. Reference is also made to the actions taken or initiated by the International Electrotechnical Commission (hereafter abbreviated IEC) relative to the fundamentals of measurements of mechanic, electric, and magnetic quantities.
