Abstract
It’s a well known fact that synthetic drugs may sometime precipitate gastric ulcers that’s why the ethno botanical sources provides a wide range of herbs which can treat gastrointestinal disorders. In order to establish the pharmacological basis for the ethno medicinal use of Mimosa pudica in gastrointestinal affections, the present study was undertaken to examine the aqueous and ethanolic extract of leaves of Mimosa pudica (AEMP and EEMP respectively) in ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage and pylorus ligated (PL) gastric ulcers. Ulcer index was common parameter studied in both models, further effect on lipid peroxidation namely malondialdehyde [MDA] content and antioxidant enzymes viz. superoxide dismutase [SOD] and catalase [CAT] levels were studied in ethanolic induced model. The results reflect that EEMP shows significant decrease in volume of gastric juice, total acidity, free acidity; increase gastrointestinal pH and reduce ulcer index (P< 0.01) and increase in the antioxidant enzymes viz. CAT (P< 0.01), SOD (P< 0.01) and decrease in MDA (P< 0.01) with respect to control.
