Abstract

Gastroenterology Online (www.gastrojournal.org) is now providing a new feature, “Articles in Press,” which contains articles accepted and scheduled to be published in a future issue of the journal. The feature was introduced to the site in November 2003, displaying articles assigned to be published in the current issue of the journal. The goal of this feature is to make available accepted articles 2–3 months before print publication.“In order to accelerate the progress in gastroenterology, we would like to make our accepted manuscripts available to the readership as early as possible. And the most effective way to do that is by posting articles on-line prior to print publication,” says Dr. David Brenner, Editor of the journal. “We believe this will give a head start to people in the field, both researchers and clinicians. Our goal is to accelerate the dissemination of important information,” Brenner says.Even though articles will be posted to the site almost immediately after acceptance, authors will still have the opportunity to review their page proofs and make necessary changes for the final print publication. Once the print issue has been compiled and is ready to mail, all articles contained in the issue will be removed from the “Articles in Press” section of the site. The finalized print version containing those articles will then be uploaded to the site as the “Current Issue.”According to Brenner, electronic pre-print publication began several years ago with the Journal of Biological Chemistry, followed by many other journals in basic and clinical science. “We’re not the first, but are among the premier journals that offer this feature,” says Brenner. “It’s a real service to the readership, open only to subscribers. We are taking advantage of the new technology to improve what we provide to our members.” Gastroenterology Online (www.gastrojournal.org) is now providing a new feature, “Articles in Press,” which contains articles accepted and scheduled to be published in a future issue of the journal.
