Abstract

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis represents a group of benign diseases that includes eosinophilic esophagitis, gastritis, enteritis, and colitis. It is characterized by a tissue eosinophilic infiltration that may affect the different layers of the digestive tract and any section of it, although the most common involvement is the stomach and small intestine. In spite of its rareness, it is important to recognize it because the disease can be treated, and it may sometimes confused with other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. The signs and symptoms of this disease depend on the extension and layers of the digestive tube that have eosinophilic infiltration (mucosal, muscular and/or serosal). The diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis is confirmed by a characteristic biopsy and/or eosinophilic ascitic fluid in absence of known causes such as parasitic infections, drug reactions or neoplasias. There are several therapeutic options, although there are no controlled studies existing that have evaluated their efficacy. Therefore, in general, treatment is performed empirically, in relation to the seriousness of the clinical manifestations.
