Abstract

This paper presents gaskinetic studies, with analytical and numerical methods, with the question of unsteady high-speed collisionless planar jet development: startup to a steady flow; and shutting down from a steady flow. A fundamental space–velocity–time relation is adopted in this study and plays a crucial role in obtaining the final results. The complete results include flowfield properties of density, velocity, pressure and temperature, along with complex but accurate integrations with time, geometry and specific speed ratio factors. Several numerical simulations with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method validate these analytical exact results. The problem is fundamental, the results are compact and seem final.
