Abstract

KOH coadsorbed with a transition metal oxide is able to catalyze the gasification of graphite with steam at temperatures as low as 860 K. Nine different KOH-transition metal oxide mixtures were studied. The most active co-catalysts found so far are KOHNiO and KOH-Fe 2O 3. The reaction rate was monitored at 860 K for over 24 turnovers. The major products of the gasification process are H 2 and CO 2 with either catalysts. CH 4 and CO are also detectable in small concentrations.
