Abstract

Previous measurements of ultrasonic relaxation in binary mixtures composed of water and sodium trifluoroacetate showed the micellar nature of these solutions. Subsequently analytical measurements showed that oxygen and nitrogen are present in high concentration in these mixtures. Owing to the technological importance of this finding, the solubility of air (711 Torr) in sodium trifluoroacetate + water mixtures of the following nominal molality: 1.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, and 19.0 mole kg -1 at 21.5, 31.5, and 39.5 °C is studied and reported in this note. The gases showed a solubility, in the 19.0 mole kg -1 mixture, nearly 500 times higher than the corresponding one in water. The solubility data are treated by thermodynamic equations in order to evaluate the dissolution enthalpy.
