Gas chromatographic characterization of sulfur-containing compounds 5. Thiophene, furan, and benzene derivatives

Abstract

1. Indices for the retention of 38 sulfur-containing thiophene, furan, and benzene derivatives have been determined on columns packed with Apiezon M, Silicone OV-17, Triton X-305, and PEG-1000, at 130°C. 2. Equations relating the indices of retention for the phenyl-n-alkyl sulfides with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain have been developed. 3. Discussion has been given of the effect of various types of intermolecular interaction on the values of the retention indices of various compounds. Gas Chromatographic methods give no indication of H-bonding between polyethylene glycol and the aryl mercaptans.
