Abstract

Measurements are presented of gamma-radiation from bound excited states of residual nuclei from reactions induced in 16O and 19F nuclei by 150 MeV protons, together with measurements of the radioactive nuclei produced in the bombardment of 16O. The results provide some measure of the parentage of the ground state of 16O from the 16O(p, pn) reaction. Observation of the small cross-section for the production of the first excited state of 12C in the 16O(p, pα) reaction provides support for the purity of the shell-model wave-function of the ground state of 16O. Cross-sections for the 19F(p, pα) 15N and 19F(p, pt) reactions leading to excited states of the residual nuclei are small but finite.
