Abstract
Palearctic Cecidomyiidae known from bud galls on spurge in Europe are revised. One of them, a new species, has already been introduced into and become established in western North America for the control of leafy spurge. That species, Spurgia esula Gagné, as well as Spurgia capitigena (Bremi), new combination, are placed in Spurgia, a new genus erected for them. The name Cecidomyia subpatula Bremi is a new junior synonym of S. capitigena. Of the other species treated here, Dasineura schulzei Rübsaamen, Janetiella euphorbiae De Stefani Perez, and possibly Macrolabis euphorbiae Fedotova form similar bud galls on other species of Euphorbia, and Macrolabis lutea Rübsaamen is an inquiline in galls of Spurgia capitigena. Each species of spurge apparently has its own species of cecidomyiid; the bud galls are similar but the gall midges causing the galls are not all congeneric.
