Abstract
Present-day critics are generally in agreement with those of Galdós’ contemporaries who saw La desheredada as marking the beginning of a new stage in his literary development. Galdós himself, indeed, clearly felt that La desheredada represented a break with the past when on April 14, 1882, he wrote to Francisco Giner, ‘Efectivamente, yo he querido en esta obra entrar por nuevo camino o inaugurar mi segunda o tercera manera, como se dice de los pintores’.
