Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The expression of aromatase, a key regulatory enzyme in estrogen biosynthesis in granulosa cells is essential for follicular growth and coordination of the ovulatory process. The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), its biosynthetic enzyme GAD, and GABA-A receptors have been found in the oviduct and ovary. Our previous data indicate that GABA-A agonists increase estradiol secretion by human luteinized granulosa cells (GC) and alter cytosolic concentrations of Ca2+ in GC in a receptor-specific manner.
