Abstract

In the late nineteenth century, many new trends emerged from the musical field, including Impressionism and Expressionism. In spite of that, the Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, still succeeded to the compositional manner of the Romantic period and enhanced it. The purpose of this article is to make a deep and comprehensive of Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in g minor, Op. 19. The article includes five chapters. In first chapter, the author describes the purpose, content, methods and steps of this studying. Second chapter introduces Rachmaninoff's life and his compositional characteristics. Third chapter is the analysis of Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in g minor, Op. 19. By analyzing the music from, tonality, rhythm and the motive arrangements, the author displays the comprehensive understanding of the structure. In chapter four, the author provides his interpretation perspective according to Rachmaninoff's compositional style and the analysis of this piece. The author also mentions the technique in performing this piece. The article ends in a summary of the studying of this piece.
