Abstract

In the late nineteenth century, many new trends emerged from the musical field, including Impressionism and Expressionism. In spite of that, the Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, still succeeded to the compositional manner of the Romantic period and enhanced it. He was not only an excellent pianist, but also a fantastic conductor. His recordings are still widely spreaded till now. This thesis takes Rachmaninoff’s《Morceaux de Fantaisie》as the topic. After graduating from Moscow Conservotary in 1892, He composed the piece and dedicated it to Anton Arensky(1856-1915). Chapter one of this thesis is an introduction of the motivation, and purpose of the study. Chapter two is a research on the life and piano style of the composer, including the influence of Russian literature had on his work. Chapter three explain the definition and transformation of Fantasia, and the composition background. With the goal of understanding his music style and compositional technique, Chapter four is musical analysis and performance interpretation. In the conclusion chapter of this thesis, it hopes that by way of having an in-depth understanding of《Morceaux de Fantaisie》, the performance and interpretation of this work can be more accurate.
