Abstract

In the heart, Na+/K+ ATPase (NKA) activity maintains Na+ and K+ gradients, and indirectly influences intracellular calcium levels and cardiac contractility. The cardiac NKA is inhibited by phospholemman (PLM), a member of the FXYD protein family. However, the possible cardiac expression and function of other FXYDs has not been determined. In this study, Western blot analysis revealed that FXYD6, an inhibitor of NKA, is also expressed in human myocardium. FXYD6 expression was increased in failing human hearts, and we observed a high molecular weight species consistent with a FXYD6-FXYD6 dimer.
