Abstract

Classical control algorithms require a complete mathematical model of the process but modelling of bioreactors is difficult because of the time-varying properties of the bacteria and unknown effects. Therefore, advanced control strategies are required. One topical subject is the application of fuzzy control systems. The control of the substrate concentration in a continuously operated bioreactor using fuzzy logic will be presented in this paper. The properties of a fuzzy controller and a fuzzy hybrid system which combines a conventional controller and a fuzzy logic component will be discussed based on simulation results.
