Abstract

This first topical meeting devoted entirely to materials problems in projected fusion reactors was sponsored by the American Nuclear Society, the Office of Fusion Energy of the US Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the Nuclear Metallurgy Committee of the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) and the American Society for Metals (ASM). The subject of materials for fusion reactor applications has been covered to some extent in practically all previous meetings on engineering and technology for fusion with a depth ranging from a few papers to several sessions. This first topical meeting was thus organized to not only present new data and information relevant to fusion materials but also to integrate and review past progress and present a current status report. The programme consisted of 23 invited technical papers and 198 contributed papers, all presented in 21 sessions spanning three full days.
