Abstract

This Ninth Symposium in the semi-annual series on Engineering Problems was the largest to date with about 800 participants and 600 papers, symbolic of the rapid growth of fusion engineering. Approximately 15% of the participants were from outside the United States (the ‘sister’ conference in Europe, the Symposium on Fusion Technology or ‘SOFT’, is held during the alternate years). Hosted by the University of Illinois Fusion Studies Laboratory, the Ninth Symposium was sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) with co-sponsorship by the Office of Fusion Energy of the US Department of Energy (DoE), the Argonne National Laboratory, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the American Nuclear Society.
