Abstract

Cultivating grain maize prior to winter wheat must be viewed critically, because of the problems with fusarium. Many farms opt for turning tillage for this reason. For erosion protection, however, mulch seeding would often be preferable. At the Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Animal Husbandry tests were made to determine whether fusarium infection could sufficiently be prevented by intensively chopping the maize straw and mixing incorporation into the soil. The results from three years of research have proven that this can only be attained with intensive mulching cultivation. The figures for DON (deoxynivalenol) in mulch till were still significantly above those from plough cultivation.
