Abstract

Critical consciousness (CC) is recognized as an antidote against oppression. This project aimed to further validate the Contemporary Critical Consciousness Measure-Short, which combined two previously published measures. A sample of 626 participants was recruited via Qualtrics Panels. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the 24-item CCCM-S as a strong index of CC. Structural equation modeling results supported construct validity and a non-significant relationship with socially desirable responding. CCCM-S scores accounted for variance in CC action above and beyond personality traits and social justice self-efficacy. Known-group comparisons revealed that more marginalized status characteristics were associated with greater CC. Implications for research are discussed.
