Abstract
Correlation of fundic gland development to herbivory rating was examined with 23 mammalian species. A positive correlation was found in large herbivores, but not in smaller animals. Ruminants had undeveloped fundic glands in contrast to other large ungulates possibly due to abomasal folds which increased the gland numbers. Key words: Hindstomach, fundic gland, histology, herbivores, abomasum
