Abstract

Over the last one-and-a-half decades, telecommunication-grade high silica optical fibres have matured from infancy to almost near perfection in terms of ultimate low loss and high transmission bandwidth. Most of the fundamental characteristics of such fibres are now well understood. A tutorial review of the basic propagation characteristics of a variety of these class of optical transmission media is presented with a view to provide a unified description of the same. It should be useful to telecommunication system engineers contemplating introduction of optical telecommunication as well as senior undergraduate and graduate students.
