Abstract

The article examines the color nominations in landscape descriptions, establishes their functional, semantic and pragmatic role. The relevance of the work is predetermined by the rapid development of the culturological approach to the study of languages and literature, as well as the possibility of using the results obtained to study the role of color nominations in the organization of literary discourse in general. The purpose of this study is to establish the role of color nominations in the poet’s work. To achieve the stated purpose, the following tasks were required: identification of the main trends in using color nominations in the texts of E. Pound’s poems, disclosure of primary color symbols, observation of the process of increasing connotative meanings of various shades and their analysis, determination of the functions performed by color nominations in landscape descriptions, establishing links between the color nominations appearing in the texts and the personality of the poet, the peculiarities of his creation method. As the research material, landscape descriptions in the poems of E. Pound were selected and analyzed. To fulfill the tasks set, such methods as structural, comparative and typological, as well as linguistic and etymological analysis of color nominations were used. As the result of the study, it was possible to establish that the color nominations perform in the poems of E. Pound symbolic, semantic, nominative, image-forming and emotional functions, acting in landscape descriptions as one of the main means of conveying the author’s idea.
