Abstract

The article focuses on examining the discourse marker păi frequently used in the regional varieties of Romanian, and the analysis is based on a corpus of dialect texts. We followed the theoretical models proposed by Jucker (1997), Heritage and Sorjonen (2018), and Crible and Degand (2019). Depending on its position (pre-clausal or clause-internal in turn-initial, turn-internal or turn-final) the main functions of păi are: (a) to signal the answer, and (b) to mark the transition between narrative episodes. There are several values grouped under each function, depending on the speaker’s attitude and his/her epistemic/affective stance.
