Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses fully automated X-ray testing of cast parts. This technique is used in serial inspection of mass-produced parts by means of adjusted radiation energy and sophisticated X-ray image intensifiers. The operator needs to interfere with the automatic inspection process only in case of doubtful parts. The operator completely concentrates on the inspection image at hand for his subsequent decision. A fully automatic system guarantees that all defects leading to a reject decision according to quality specifications are recognized and classified by the system. The unrestricted functionality of a fully automatic inspection system is checked periodically by a self-test. The fully automatic systems that are in use in serial radioscopic inspection call for a reliable and economic solution in terms of image processing and automatic inspection unit. The system has proved its reliability for the past two years in the serial inspection of cast wheels of various moldings and has been integrated in the production line. In future, such systems would become indispensible in X-ray quality assurance of light metal components.
