Abstract

Two substantial ship hull roughness surveys at the beginning and end of the decade, 1976-1986, show improvement in surface condition of new ship hulls and ships in service, and substantial improvement in anti-fouling performance owing to the introduction of ablative anti-foulings over the decade. It is shown that U.K. fleet operators are saving large sums each year because of greater care in bottom maintenance, resulting in smoother surfaces, and from improved anti foulings.
