Abstract

In the present examples of self-assembly of a naphthalene–diimide building block, linear hydrocarbon solvents directly participate in the nucleation step owing to a geometry allowed, favorable mixing with peripheral alkyl chains of the monomer, which leads to a cooperative supramolecular polymerization pathway. In sharp contrast, lack of such efficient nucleation leads to ill-defined polymerization pathway in cyclic hydrocarbons. However, in the presence of a small amount of additive (preformed fiber in linear alkanes), cooperative polymerization pathway could be retrieved even in cyclic alkanes.
