Abstract
Americans consume added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium in excess, which heightens risk of preventable, diet-related chronic diseases. Many packaged foods and beverages high in these nutrients feature confusing labels, hindering consumers’ ability to make choices that align with their health goals. Front-of-package nutrition labels (FOPNL) aim to address this issue by providing clear, accessible nutrition information on the front of product packaging, enabling quicker and more informed comparisons between products. FOPNL can positively influence more nutritious consumer purchasing decisions and encourage healthier food industry practices. Although over a dozen countries have mandatory FOPNL policies, the United States (U.S.) has yet to adopt this policy. This paper overviews FOPNL evidence and global trends, as well as the legislative context for adopting FOPNL as a standard practice in the U.S.
