Abstract
Key points The article processing charges (APC)‐based model of open access has constituted a major obstacle to achieving open access in developing countries. High exchange rates of local currencies to the dollar make sustaining the APC open access model impractical. Other approaches should be used to achieve equitable and inclusive open access.
