Abstract
This paper describes the development from scratch of a Nonlinear Model Predictive Control course, which was designed for 5th year Process Engineering master's students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). After taking the course, students are able to program their own nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) in MATLAB, and have gained a good understanding of the most important issues related to the implementation of this type of controller in chemical and biochemical processes. The course follows problem-based learning principles. It is heavily focused on “doing”, where coding assignments are a large part of the course load. The student learning is assessed by an unconventional combination of formative feedback (one-to-one session, where we discuss their assignments and the solution strategies of the students) as well as summative feedback (systematic grading of their assignments and final exam). The student perception of the course, which was assessed by a feedback questionnaire, shows that the course adds value to them by not only helping them write more interesting Master's projects but also by improving their skill set for the job market.
