Abstract

OPEC ReviewVolume 4, Issue 3 p. 19-54 FROM PAKISTAN TO JAPAN: THE ENERGY PROBLEMS OF ASIA Dr. Kirk R. Smith, Dr. Kirk R. Smith Resource Systems Institute, East-West Center Honolulu, Hawaii, USA *Research Associate and Energy Project Leader in the Resource Systems Institute at the East-West Center. He holds degrees in astrophysics, and environmental health sciences and energy from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a member of or consultant to, a number of national and local energy studies, including two major national studies on nuclear waste. He sits on a national committee charged with developing risk standards for nuclear power convened by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federation of American Scientists, and has extensive lecturing experience in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.Search for more papers by this authorDr. Harrison Brown, Dr. Harrison Brown **Ph.D. in chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University in 1941. He worked on problems of plutonium chemistry during World War II. and, after the war, became Professor of Chemistry in the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. He became Professor of Geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in 1951 and Professor of science and Government in 1967. He was Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences from 1962 until 1974. In 1977 he became Director of the Resource Systems Institute at the East-West Center.
