Abstract

We review the serendipitous but directed path from Kondo insulator Ce 3Bi 4Pt 3 to heavy-Fermion superconductor CeCoIn 5 as exemplary of Zachary Fisk's unique approach to new materials synthesis. The significance as well as the current status of the CeMIn 5 materials is also discussed. Finally, based on these insights, we speculate as to paths forward in exploratory materials research.
