A moral obligation of scientists is to apply this knowledge and the resulting technologies for the benefit of humanity and its environment. Perhaps one of the most obvious applications of science is in the promotion of human health. Materials science plays a very important role in this field: sensors that help with the detection of toxins and the diagnosis of disease, materials used to produce antibacterial surfaces, nanoparticles that are instrumental in drug delivery, and biocompatible materials used in bone, muscle, and dental implants, to name but a few. Advanced Materials has a proud tradition of publishing research at the forefront of materials science, and a substantial body of this work has included the synthesis and study of materials with biological and medical applications. We are now delighted to announce a new special section in Advanced Materials: Advanced Healthcare Materials will be published at regular intervals starting from this issue, and will focus on the application of mate-rials in healthcare and biotechnology. As an integral part of Advanced Materials, the Advanced Healthcare Materials section will publish papers of the highest standard that have undergone the same rigorous peer review evaluation that readers have come to expect from Advanced Materials. Advanced Healthcare Materials Advanced Healthcare Materials will contain an attractive mix of Communications and Review Articles, Progress Reports, Research News, and Essays covering the design and synthesis of materials, biomaterials, and devices for medical applications; the physical, chemical, and biological properties of these materials; as well as their clinical and biotechnological applications. Articles in the section will be cited as normal Advanced Materials articles and will also be prominently featured in our popular online news service Materials Views.com and MaterialsViewsChina. com. All articles will be covered by major indexing and abstracting services, including Web of Science and Medline. As section editors, we will be supported by an Editorial Advisory Board under the Chairmanship of Younan Xia (Washington University in St. Louis). We also thank the following outstanding scientists for their enthusiasm in agreeing to join the Editorial Advisory Board: Dan Anderson (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Frank Caruso (University of Melbourne), Warren Chan (University of Toronto), Xuesi Chen (Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry), Mauro Ferrari (Rice University), David Mooney (Harvard University), Christof Niemeyer (Dortmund University), Teruo Okano (Tokyo Women's Medical University), Tae Gwan Park (KAIST), John Rogers (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne), Molly Stevens (Imperial College), George Whitesides (Harvard University), and Yi Yan Yang (Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore). In his Editorial on page H8, Younan Xia introduces Advanced Healthcare Materials and the role of materials science in med-icine and biotechnology.1 Figure 1Open in figure viewerPowerPoint We look forward to the development of this exciting section as Advanced Healthcare Materials becomes a forum for the publication of the very best work in the field of materials science aimed at promoting human health. We invite you to enjoy the contents of the inaugural issue and encourage you to continue to submit your top manuscripts in this important field to Advanced Materials.
