Abstract

The material conditions for coolers are studied: the caloric effect, the elementary temperature reduction mechanism, its cyclic repetition, and the (sole) mechanism of magnifying the caloric effect. Substances which possess a caloric effect are the basic ingredient for the viability of coolers (heat pumps and engines). The general thermodynamic model does not include any information about how coolers are constructed indeed. This observation is implemented into the model. The paper intends to unify many particular known cases into a generalized principle.
