Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a well known permanent solid state joining process which is growing very rapidly for joining different metal alloys and non-metals in manufacturing industries (marine, aerospace, spacecraft, and automotive sector etc.). Presently, welding of metal alloys is replaced by friction stir welding owing to its attractive properties. These includes low weld cost, superior tensile strength, low distortion, high micro hardness, refined micro structure, produce defect free joint, environment friendly etc. However, the overall quality of joint fabricated by FSW is depends upon tool pin profile, tool material, processing parameters etc. Hence, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview of FSW types, significance, merits and demerits, process variable and applications of FSW etc. Further, the results of various researches focusing on fabrication of FSW of Al based alloy are summarized.
