Abstract

A new apparatus which can measure frictional properties of surfaces microscopically is applied to various coatings on glass substrates. The coefficient of friction is determined through the measurement of the phase difference between the external force and the motion of the contact stylus. The motional signal is picked up by a phonograph cartridge. The principle and technique of the measurement is described first, and then results on the coatings of MgO, ZnO, and C are presented. Some ceramic coatings showed a nonuniformity of friction coefficient over the surface which is apparently flat.
