Abstract

Measurements of friction and of heat transfer on an annulus in which swirl flow of water was produced by a single helical vane indicate that the friction and the heat-transfer coefficients for turbulent flow can be predicted by the appropriate adjustment of available values for straight channels. Friction in the laminar range exhibits similarity with that found for curved tubes but the interpretation of the few heat transfer results obtained for this region is clouded by the possible contributions of free convection.
