Abstract
UNLIKE THE WEATHER, Freshman English is a subject most instructors believe they can do something about. All it takes is a lot of effort and a little ingenuity. Better textbooks, stronger teaching, more innovative approaches, greater emphasis on fundamentals in high school-these are the usual panaceas offered to create an optimum climate in a course that is becoming increasingly uncomfortable to teach as student interest and ability decline. The trouble is that although one or two such improvements might change the atmosphere in some classrooms, they will not cause conditions to alter in most.
