Abstract

This paper presents research on the waveguide type of dielectric resonator antenna with tunable operating frequency. The tuning was achieved by micro-displacement of parts of dielectric resonator spherical and rectangular shape. The influence of geometric shapes and material permittivity of dielectric resonator on the frequency tuning of lowest resonant mode and antenna characteristics were investigated. It is shown that the unloaded quality factor of dielectric resonator increases while tuning which affects radiation efficiency improvement. At the same time, the total antenna efficiency and radiation pattern do not depredate. The proposed method ensures up to 35% alteration of antenna operating frequency while displacement up to a hundred micrometers in the centimeter wavelength range. Required displacements are reduced while operating frequency is increasing. Such micro-displacements can be implemented by modern piezoelectric actuators.
